The Lodge
From postal station to mountain home
The building on Vršič has stood for more than a hundred years. In that time it has been a staging post for horses, a border guard station and a mountain hut — but always shelter for whoever came over the pass.
A short history
1913
Built as a station where postmen travelling between Kranjska Gora and Trenta rested and changed their horses.
between the wars
The building serves as a border guard station.
1952
Hikers of Poštar Jesenice take it over and convert it into a small mountain hut. It opens on 22 July.
1953
PTT hikers from Ljubljana and Gorenjska build a new, larger lodge. It opens on 9 August.
1974 — 1977
An annex connects the old building to the new one. The hut is renamed a dom and reopens, renovated, on 2 July 1978.
1985
An auxiliary building with guest rooms goes up beside the lodge.
Today
We are open for as long as the road over Vršič is passable and the mountains let people near.
We take in hikers on multi-day traverses, cyclists who have just cleared the last hairpin, motorcyclists heading down to the Soča, and families who drove up for the view. Everyone gets a bed, a hot meal, and a quiet you won't find in the valley.
